Vik, great article! and I'm glad you included the software part. Not my business, but I found that interesting!
But I wouldn't say that the idea of "digital radio" didn't catch on, but just that TI abandoned the path it was pioneering with digital radio for cellular. We actually had quite a few products that were working based on the technology, the first of which was Bluetooth, as you may recall. Other companies have continued the trend, and the ADPLL, as part of this trend, has become very popular. Anyway, we sure had a good time there, didn't we? :-)
Fun fact : this was my first real comment on public forum and I now completely understand people's urge to go back and forth reading comments and replying 😂.
I work in big telco company in Australia and lead AI efforts there. I can tell you two things for certain
1) productivity gain and better service. Example: if internet was down for a house and technician visits for repair; he would go through notes and be on call to identify what previous technicians did. Now he talks to llm that has access to telco data and all the notes.
Data was always there, easy way to talk to data wasnt
2) all execs believe. So they are throwing money at openai or Claude. Frankly, it doesn't matter if real gains are made; cost to not spend money and sit out of AI is too high for execs who are humans with money and desires to show good work
For 1. I have AI bots pop up every single time and now we have AI in call centers. It is the single most infuriating thing to encounter when trying to resolve your issue. Everytime I encounter this I tell the stupid bot that I would want to talk to the customer care executive. Talking to a actual human gets my problem resolved.
All that AI did was organize information. Whether it is right or not nobody knows.
Based on 2. then it is a bubble with the low interest and money printing as enablers. All it needs is interest rates to go up so that all the frauds get exposed and a collapse.
If there is a collapse at least we will get cheap energy and compute with all that infrastructure expansion.
Lol, of course it will be ads and inferring what next addictive crap to show to the user and that does not have to be accurate at all. Hopefully we see users getting saturated with this infinite scroll crap and adblockers becoming more wide spread.
It is certainly helping people who write and talk about AI than AI itself. Not a day goes by with someone saying AI will replace X or Y as it pays to write such things.
I skip most of your content on AI. Fundamental Semi conductors, architecture, RF content etc is what I come to read.

It sure was a great time Oren! Thanks for the context!
Is anybody making money off AI? Has AI been integrated into companies? Would AI be missed in our day to day life if not available?
What is really the hype with AI and does it deserve these crazy valuations and investments?

Welcome! It’s pretty awesome. Online communities are great with the right people

Good inputs!

Metas earnings calls showed ai is contributing to ad revenue

Hahaha- understandable! Glad at least some of it is useful. I figured I’ll also talk occasionally from a user side but semi is where my heart is.
I want your analysis on difficult semi topics along with its physics and mathematics.
I do them but they are a lot of work
Haha I loved this!
