To me, this OpenAI - Jalapeno headline seems like a PR stunt. Most new ASICs take two revisions with the first revision to identify the post-silicon bugs to fix in the next one. First pass silicon success is really only feasible when mature IP and heavy emulation efforts derisk the ASIC enough. I don't see any meaningful test results that indicate this is is the final product, only that they leveraged OpenAI and that they taped out a chip in 9 months.

While Qualcomm is buying Modular and apparently pondering other acquisitions, I can't help wonder if Qualcomm itself might be a takeover target? They do have a strong position and deep reservoir of modem-related IP, and some of their own core designs are IMHO quite good. As to who might buy Qualcomm, my uninformed guess (no leaks or insider knowledge , unfortunately) has Alphabet as the top of the dance cardone: they have the required deep pockets and also the least overlap/ redundancy, plus Google's custom SoCs for their Pixels need help, urgently.
